October Gardening Chores
Take cuttings of herbs this month to over winter. Herbs to consider: Lemon Verbena, Scented Geraniums.
Tip prune roses 6-12" now to promote new growth.
Use a root stimulator when planting pansies and other cold weather flowers.
Dry herbs and flowers, and preserve greenery for Christmas: grasses, Artemesia, Rosemary, Thyme, Boxwood, Magnolia, Eleagnus, English ivy, Nandina and Acuba - place cut and hammered stems in a solution of equal parts of glycerin and hot water.
Plant peonies for May bloom, in sunny, open location. They require good drainage and rich soil. Do not plant deep. They can be planted from September, until the ground is frozen.
Plant asters, Japanese Anemones, Sasanqua Camellias, etc.
If you have not dug up your Amaryllis, do so now. Pull leaves after they dry and store the bulb in a cool dry place. Repot and water at Thanksgiving.
It is now time to overseed if using Fescue for your lawn.
Mustard greens, Kale, Radish, Spinach, Lettuce, Onions, Broccoli, Cauliflower and Collards can still be planted in early October.
Enjoy the changing colors of the trees. The Ozarks has some of the brightest, breath-taking color changes!!
