Homesteading Diary 112

2009

1/19/2009:  We are now in the new year 2009.  Figured I had better start this year's new diary.  We've had some cold snaps this winter with some pretty low temps.  They've been sandwiched in between some nice weather, too, though.  I know when the water dishes and hoses are frozen, he works a lot harder to carry water in buckets to the livestock and the dogs.  Our New Years Eve and New Years Day were quiet, as usual.  A few weeks ago, we went over to help some friends butcher their two hogs.  The guys took care of slaughter, and the gutting and skinning the first day, then put the hogs to hang overnight in their shop to marble.  The next day, the guys quartered and cut, while she and I  wrapped and marked for the freezer.  Over two days time, we got a lot of work done, but also had a lot of good visiting time.  We're getting ready to butcher our own hogs as soon as we have another few days of cold enough weather in a row.  We have two, and then there's two that belong to the kids also.

We're still waiting on our plans for building our house, which have been put on hold for now.  Winter's pretty quiet on the homestead.  We have seed catalogues to dream over, books to read, and a few movies to watch here & there.  Then there's cooking lots of good meals with our canned and frozen produce and meat.
