Sugar Mountain Kennels - About Us

We are a retired couple who have been raising dogs since we had our first litter in January 2000.  We live in south central Missouri in a very rural area about an hour's drive east of Springfield.  We personally raise Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and Great Pyrenees.  However, in the past, we have also raised the Cocker Spaniels, Shelties, and Miniature Pinschers.  Our daughter, Shanna, now raises Dachshunds and hopes to again be raising Shelties soon.  Our son, Shawn, now raises Miniature Pinschers and hopes to be raising Brussels Griffons in the future.  He has a male but is searching for the perfect female.

How we got started to begin with:

Back in 1997, we started with one dog, which was Teddy.  Teddy was the King of the Mountain, but he was lonesome, so we bought him a wife and named her Vixen.

Teddy was very protective of his new baby, and he also house-trained her.

Eventually, she grew up.  They had their first litter of puppies in January 2000.

I could barely stand to part with any of them, but we did (because he wouldn't let me keep them all!)  However, we did keep 2 of Vixen's daughters, which were Sugar and Wolfe Dance.  In 2001, Vixen and Teddy had their second litter of puppies.

We lost Vixen in December, 2001.  She was my baby, and I miss her greatly, but the Pomeranians were and still are my first love.  We kept 1 small black female out of Dance and Wolf Knight, born 11/27/02.  She looks just like her grandmother, Vixen, and I named her Mini-Vee.  She is very ornery, and is always into everything.  She looks a lot like Vixen, but she has a personality all her own.  We lost Teddy in June 2006, and life has not been the same without our King of the Mountain foundation male.

We've fallen in love with more than one pom puppy over the years of raising them.  It's always painful to lose a beloved dog friend, but we still fall in love, regardless.

We've added more Pomeranian sires and more Pomeranian dams since then.  We've worked hard on always improving our bloodlines.  All the Pom puppies we sell have champions in their pedigrees, and they are all AKC registered.  We've worked on unusual colors, ending up with some blue/tans, black & tans, and wolf sable puppies.

Since we started, we've added a few different breeds of dogs, and we've built the kennels up a bit at a time.  We're still working on them, just like the homestead, and improving them a bit at a time.  We have also brought some of our adult children (with families of their own) into the dog-raising business, after they fell "in love" with a particular breed.

Dogs have a way of "choosing" you, and it really doesn't work the other way around, no matter how much you think you are doing the choosing.
